A24 Dates “ENEMY” & Johansson-starring “UNDER THE SKIN”

The young A24 Films has established an exciting taste in the pictures they’re releasing. 2013 alone saw Harmony Korine’s electrifying, outlandish SPRING BREAKERS, as well as fantastic coming-of-age story THE SPECTACULAR NOW, while 2014 will bring the studio’s feet into genre with the release of two, intriguing and acclaimed titles picked up out of last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival: Jonathan Glazer’s UNDER THE SKIN and Dennis Villenueve’s Jake Gyllenhaal-starring doppelgänger saga, ENEMY.

In what I can’t help but excitedly refer to as “classy LIFEFORCE”, UNDER THE SKIN finds BIRTH director Jonathan Glazer evocatively chronicle Scarlett Johannsson as a beautiful woman [weird] stalking unwitting men in Scotland. From TIFF: “Her identity and her motives unclear, she is simply, and quite literally, a sexual threat. Her eyes deadened but alert, she prowls night streets and deserted locales in a white van, seeking male victims. More could be said about the plot, but it’s best to allow UNDER THE SKIN to reveal itself. From its arresting first image — a pure, white pinpoint of light — it expands outward to become an increasingly absorbing mystery. It’s also a Rorschach test for everything one might fear about relations between men and women.”

ENEMY, from Dennis Villenueve (of this year’s Hugh Jackman thriller PRISONERS) is an acclaimed, surreal film starring the aforementioned Gyllenhaal, as well as Mélanie Laurent (INGLORIOUS BASTERDS) and Sarah Gadon (COSMOPOLIS). Reviews painted an entirely warped, engrossing picture that we can’t wait to take in. In the film, “Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a glum, disheveled history professor, who seems disinterested even in sex with his beautiful girlfriend, Mary (Mélanie Laurent). Watching a movie on the recommendation of a colleague, Adam spots his double, an actor named Anthony Clair, in a bit role, and decides to track him down — an adventure he quite relishes. The identical men meet, and their lives become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined.”

ENEMY is slated for March 14, 2014, while UNDER THE SKIN will hit April 4, 2014. You can find teasers for both below. For more, see our Chris Alexander’s glowing review of UNDER THE SKIN here.
