Director departs “GODZILLA 2”

The filmmaker who successfully brought Japan’s King of the Monsters to the United States has dropped out of the follow-up film.

Deadline reports that Gareth Edwards has had an amicable parting of the ways with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, which are producing GODZILLA 2. The site speculates that Edwards, who debuted with the DIY creature feature MONSTERS and is currently working on ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, has smaller projects he’d like to focus on instead of doing his third megamovie in a row. Max Borenstein, who wrote the screenplay for Edwards’ GODZILLA, is also writing the sequel, in which other classic Toho creatures like Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah join the fray. The release date for GODZILLA 2, for which a replacement director is being sought, was recently shifted to March 22, 2019, and Warners and Legendary have also settled on a May 20, 2020 berth for the ultimate monster bash, GODZILLA VS. KONG.
