Directors named for Toho’s “GODZILLA 2016”

With Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ GODZILLA revival awaiting its sequel, the studio that first spawned the Big G 51 years ago has signed a pair of filmmakers for the monster’s first Japanese feature since 2004’s GODZILLA: FINAL WARS.

Variety reports that Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi will join forces to helm GODZILLA 2016 for Toho Co. According to a studio statement, “Ever since Hollywood announced that Godzilla was to be resurrected, the expectation for another Japanese Godzilla grew. And if we were to newly produce, we looked into Japanese creators who were the most knowledgeable and who had the most passion for Godzilla.” Both come from an anime background on the likes of NADIA: THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER and assorted EVANGELION titles; Anno directed the live-action CUTIE HONEY feature while Higuchi has helmed epic fantasy fare including JAPAN SINKS and the upcoming, much-awaited monster feature ATTACK ON TITAN. Anno will script GODZILLA 2016, and Higuchi will supervise the visual FX; story details have yet to be announced.
