After winning lots of buzz and landing on “Best of” lists at the recent SXSW Film Festival, Karyn Kusama’s psychological chiller THE INVITATION has been snapped up for distribution.
Drafthouse Films has announced that it has beaten several other bidders and acquired worldwide rights to THE INVITATION; specific release plans have yet to be determined. Written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who also produced by Martha Griffin and Nick Spicer, the movie stars Logan Marshall-Green as Will, a man haunted by a recent tragedy who attends a dinner party with his ex-wife Eden (Tammy Blanchard), her new husband and a number of friends. As the night goes on, Will comes to believe that there’s something sinister about the group—or is he losing hold of reality? The cast also includes Michiel Huisman, Emayatzy Corienaldi and AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW’s John Carroll Lynch; see the latter’s comments on THE INVITATION here.
“THE INVITATION has remained under our skin since we first saw it and we’re honored that we’ll be able to share with audiences everywhere,” says Drafthouse COO James Emanuel Shapiro. “Karyn, Phil and Matt have crafted one of the best mysteries we’ve ever seen.” Adds Kusama, “I know I speak for our whole team when I say that we could not be more thrilled to be working with Drafthouse Films for the release of THE INVITATION. Drafthouse is a one-of-a-kind label and an influential arbiter of taste. We love what they do. I’m excited by their passionate enthusiasm for the film and truly honored to be working with them.”
