Dominic Cooper in final talks for Custer in AMC’s “PREACHER”

The comic book adaptation bubble keeps growing and growing, with no signs of a pop in the immediate future. With the popularity of comic-based TV shows such as ARROW, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D, and the recent horror-tinged addition to the fold, iZOMBIE, making waves on the small screen, it only makes sense that AMC would be rolling the dice on another comic adaptation series, what with THE WALKING DEAD being the crown jewel in their cable empire.

For months now, fans of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s seminal supernatural western comic PREACHER have been carefully tracking announcements on the series’ development, and now FANGORIA (via The Wrap) has received word of a major casting announcement: Dominic Cooper is on board in the lead role of Jesse Custer, the possessed preacher who travels the United States literally searching for God. With prior credits that include dramatic fare such as THE DEVIL’S DOUBLE, blockbuster megaproductions such as CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER as well the critically acclaimed mini-series AGENT CARTER, and horror flicks such as ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and DRACULA UNTOLD, Cooper seems to be the perfect fit for the live action world of demons, angels, and all kinds of freaks in between.

Starring alongside Cooper will be Ruth Negga (WORLD WAR Z, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.) as his ex-girlfriend Tulip, and Joseph Gilgun (LOCKOUT, MISFITS) as the Irish vampire Cassidy. The show is being produced by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen; an odd choice for sure, but let’s remember that this is a series based on a comic with a sharp sardonic wit that featured a character called “Arseface.” The unorthodox is to be expected with anything PREACHER-related, and fans surely wouldn’t want it any other way, so long as things stay surreal and brutal.
