DVDate, Art: Kristina Buozyte’s “VANISHING WAVES”

One of my favorite films of this year, the Lithuanian psychosexual headtrip VANISHING WAVES will conclude its festival and limited theatrical release tour this July by hitting home in a two-disc package from distributor Artsploitation Films.

The third feature from Buozyte, VANISHING WAVES swept the awards at 2012’s Fantastic Fest where it blew me away. The film, while not as all-out horror as Artsploitation’s upcoming offerings WITHER, MEMORY OF THE DEAD and HIDDEN IN THE WOODS, is absolutely haunting and at times starkly visceral. It is the beautiful, evocative and strange tale of “Lukas (Marius Jampolskis), an assistant in a scientific research team functioning as a patient in a series of heavily monitored (and medicated) sensory deprivation experiments wherein he is attempting to make some form of contact with the subject, Aurora (Jurga Jutaite), a young woman who has been locked in a comatose state for some time. Doctors initially hope for just a vague reaffirmation of consciousness, but the experiment takes an unexpected twist when Lukas and Aurora actually develop a strong psychic link in their mutually altered forms of consciousness…and their link quickly evolves into a romantic, sexually charged relationship.”

VANISHING WAVES comes to DVD and VOD July 23, special features are forthcoming. If you happen to be attending the immensely-cool sounding Stanley Film Festival, that will be your next chance to catch the film on the big screen. For more, keep an eye out for a talk with the director hitting Fango.com soon.
