EXCL: Barbara Steele talks working with Ryan Gosling on “HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER”

As we reported last week, Lady Barbara Steele—royalty of European horror—is making an operatic comeback in actor Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, the surreal and disturbing fantasy thriller HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER. In the film she plays the mysterious Belladonna, a “Norma Desmond goes to Hell” dark diva.

This morning we had the chance to speak with Steele (pictured above in 2012’s THE BUTTERFLY ROOM) in a vain attempt to get more information about the film. Although she told us much, we are sworn to secrecy. But of working for, and with, Gosling, she did have this to say:

“I know why everyone loves Ryan Gosling, his crew, his mother, his fans, Eva Mendes… Because he has a generosity of spirit to whomever he talks to, a genuine interest, whether it’s the sandwich person or his actors. In this, he is a lot like Fellini. He is totally composed at all times on the set, even though he must have been under tremendous pressure. It was sort of like working for the Dalai Lama.”

Needless to say, her experience was positive. The film stars Christina Hendricks as a single mother living in a surreal, vanishing city. She is plunged into a macabre underworld while her teenage son (Iain De Caestecker) discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town.
