Exclusive Tom Savini clip, pics: New “PHANTOM” documentary

Gaston Leroux’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA has been one of the most influential novels in horror history, inspiring films starring actors ranging from Lon Chaney to Robert Englund. A new documentary explores the story’s history on screen and stage, and we’ve got an exclusive excerpt and images to share along with info on its premiere this weekend.

PHANTOMDOCUEXCLUSIVESNEWS1The feature-length PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: UNMASKING THE MASTERPIECE was written and directed by Cortlandt Hull of The Witch’s Dungeon, which produced with Bill Diamond Productions. It covers the many versions of PHANTOM, with emphasis on the movies in which Chaney, Claude Rains and Herbert Lom portrayed the “Opera Ghost,” with hundreds of restored posters and photos (including the still from the Chaney film and the Spanish poster for Rains’ version seen in before-and-after images below). Interviewees include Tom Savini (seen in the clip and in the 1st photo below), Chaney’s great-grandson Ron, Carla Laemmle, niece of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle, Hugh Panaro, current star of the Broadway PHANTOM musical, and film historian Michael F. Blake.

The documentary will have a premiere screening this Friday, May 17 at 9:30 p.m. at Wonderfest in Louisville, KY. An encore screening will be held Friday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at Monster Bash in Pennsylvania. DVDs will be available for purchase after both shows, and can also be ordered at the Witch’s Dungeon website.
