Exclusive trailer: Empire Pictures/Charles Band documentary “CELLULOID WIZARDS”

The company that gave us classics like RE-ANIMATOR and cult flicks like GHOULIES is the subject of a new feature-length documentary; read on for an exclusive look at the trailer and info on how you can help see it to completion.

CELLULOID WIZARDS IN THE VIDEO WASTELAND: THE SAGA OF EMPIRE PICTURES is the latest project from Daniel Griffith, who has created over 50 bonus features for DVD and Blu-ray genre releases, most recently including full-length productions covering THE TWILIGHT ZONE and FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM. In CELLULOID WIZARDS, he looks back at Empire Pictures, the ambitious horror/fantasy factory formed in the early ’80s by producer/director Charles Band (pictured above). The story of the company’s fast rise and fall is told through interviews with Band, directors like Stuart Gordon, Ted Nicolaou and John Carl Buechler, actors including Barbara Crampton and Richard Moll and nearly 40 others (including—full disclosure—yours truly), accompanied by movie clips, rare archival video footage and hundreds of behind-the-scenes photos.

Griffith and his Ballyhoo Motion Pictures have launched a Kickstarter campaign to cover the final production and postproduction expenses (including an original score by Empire veteran Richard Band), with exclusive merchandise offered to contributors; go here to see the campaign page.
