Fango On Set: Jennifer Blanc’s “THE GIRL”


Filmmaking couple Michael Biehn and his wife Jennifer Blanc-Biehn are teaming up again after 2011’s THE VICTIM for Jennifer’s latest, THE GIRL, with Michael starring alongside Tia Carrere and Evie Louise Thompson.

Working from a script by Kevin and Bradley Marcus (who also wrote Jennifer’s found footage directorial debut THE NIGHT VISITOR, currently in post-production), the horror-thriller tells the tale of a young boy who finds the latest victim of his psychopath father’s kidnapping and murder spree locked in their family’s shed. After freeing her from captivity, she in turn helps him escape from the terrors that he faces in his own home. “I’m definitely drawn to the darker stuff,” says Michael, who is also co-producing, “But it has to be real. I like stuff that doesn’t have heroes, good guys and bad guys.”

Carrere is both nervous and excited about her first major foray into full-blown horror as Michael’s wife in the film. “I remember when I first read [the script] and I thought, ‘I don’t know if I can pull this off.’ I couldn’t identify with the character. She’s codependent and needy, and totally blind to her husband’s horrible behavior. Then I thought, the fact that I was resistant, that made it a challenge to me. So I wanted to try it to see if I could inhabit this character that I am totally not, in real life.”

Jennifer and Michael’s production company, Blanc-Biehn Productions, has taken off since its inception with THE VICTIM. It shows no signs of slowing down either, with a slew of genre titles on the production slate for 2014 and beyond. “People started seeing what Michael and I were doing, and it all just started spiraling together,” Jennifer says. “I think it’s giving a lot of young actors and directors the opportunities to do what they want to do.”



With an ultra low budget of about $60,000 and a six-day shooting schedule, the cast and crew of THE GIRL are all doing their best to make every moment – and dollar – count. “Everyone sucks it up and makes it happen because they love to be here,” says Carrere, “And that’s what ultra low budget films test.”

THE GIRL is being filmed with the latest in Sony 4K technology and Panavision Primo Lenses, something everyone is very excited about. “The budget is so low, and you’ve got someone like Sony to partner with, and you’ve got Michael and Tia,” says Jennifer, “There’s no way that’s not going to be enticing to people.”

Carrere adds, “With the advent of digital cinema, it’s put control back in the artists’ hands. You get the create the world you want to play in, and that’s very exciting.”
