First Teaser: “AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN” and a House in New Orleans

The upcoming third season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY is poised to combine the great things of this world: The show’s natural state of batshittery, and witchcraft. Anticipation explodes then as the now requisite abstract teasers begin!

A haunty cover of “The House of the Rising Sun”, a traditional folk song popularized greatly by The Animals lies over the brief clip. It’s a song set specifically in the southern, storied town, much like this season is.  A camera pans through a house. A cat is in the corner, and a host of the show’s witchy ensemble is spread in various forms of levitation. They’re all up against a wall, some dressed in white and others, black. The colors seemingly speak to what Ryan Murphy revealed late last week, that two groups of witches long in opposition would be facing off in COVEN. The show will apparently tell the time hopping tale of Salem witches who relocated to New Orleans and there found opposition in Voodoo practitioners.

As Vulture reported, Murphy explains, “The witches of Salem, the smart ones, got out very early and they were none of the ones who were burned. They all gravitated toward New Orleans, where they now live, and every generation has a great witch who has the most powers of them all, and that’s called the Supreme. Ms. Jessica Lange is the Supreme [Ed note: Of course she is]”.

He continued, “The witches are really sort of a great allegory and metaphor for any minority group that has been persecuted and has had to go underground and, finally, is like, ‘You know what? Dammit, no. We’re fighting back,’ so that’s what they do.”

That might also explain the faces against the wall; A group of women battling not only each other, but the world, and (since this is called “Detention”) being punished for it. As per usual, I can’t wait for AMERICAN HORROR STORY.

COVEN, starring Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Alexandra Breckenridge, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidibe premieres this October on FX.
