FANGORIA readers, lend us your eyes! We’re digging through our expansive archive for tastes of terror past. Introducing From the FANGORIA Vault, a daily feature to make even the most hardened horror fan yearn for the past with clips, photos and more from way back when.

To start this bad boy off, we dug up a few photographs from one of our favorite fright features, Alan Parker’s ANGEL HEART, based on the novel FALLING ANGEL by William Hjortsberg. Starring Mickey Rourke, Lisa Bonet and Robert De Niro in one of his best villain performances, ANGEL HEART is a “voodoo noir” in which down-and-out detective Harry Angel (Rourke) is hired by an eerie aristocrat (De Niro) to hunt down a missing lounge singer named Johnny Favorite. In the course of his travels, Harry goes down a rabbit hole that leads him into an underworld of murder, mutilation and the dark arts. It’s a slow-burning chiller that keeps you guessing from beginning to end, and treats you to vicious bits of blood and gore throughout. Moreover, it’s a truly fascinating story that weighs in on religion, philosophy and identity, sold through riveting dialogue and genuinely great performances by the heavy hitters in its cast.

Digging through the FANGORIA vault, we uncovered the great shots seen below. A headless corpse, Rourke investigating and a grinning De Niro in wicked character are hopefully enough to draw up some nostalgia for you fright fanatics, and maybe even lure those unfamiliar with the film to give it a deserved watching. Check out the photos below, and make sure to check out John Nicol’s chat with Hjortsberg on his novel and the subsequent film in FANGORIA #327.
