From the FANGORIA Vault: “DEAD CALM”

Rejoice, horror hounds! It’s summer at long last, and it’s really starting to kick in over here at the FANGORIA Vault. The vampires are breaking out the sunscreen, The Black Lagoon is finally open for the season and even the Bride of Frankenstein is breaking out a bikini body to die for! Yet while many of us are trapped in the archive by witchcraft, chain or general hatred of the outside world, some of the local creeps are gearing up for any horror fan’s favorite excursion, summer vacation! And of course, with vacation on our mind, what could we have uncovered but some gorgeous and rare stills from Phillip Noyce’s seabound thriller, DEAD CALM?

DEAD CALM works as both as a suspenseful ode to Hitchcock and an intense horror film in its own right, as it pits a damaged couple against a ravenous madman who happens upon their boat. Deception, violence, seduction and desperation permeate every frame of DEAD CALM, which sport some of the finest performances in the respective careers of Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane. And Noyce crafts the film with paranoia on the mind, allowing the smaller and more subtle threats to resonate with both the audience and the characters on hand. It’s an underseen Australian genre gem, so check out these beautiful shots from the film and pursue DEAD CALM if it has escaped your grasp.
