It Is Happening Again. “TWIN PEAKS” To Return on Showtime in 2016Home,News Samuel Zimmerman
One quote, two tweets ignited a swirl of rumors and hope last week when TWIN PEAKS co-creators Mark Frost and David Lynch teased, “That gum you like is going to come back in style.” Today, it officially has.
Variety is reporting, with Twitter and YouTube tease confirmation (see below) from Frost, Lynch and Showtime that a new season of TWIN PEAKS will air on the network in 2016. The trade reports Lynch will direct every episode of the nine-episode revival, which will be set in present day and continue second season storylines, like the massive cliffanger the series ended with.
TWIN PEAKS of course is the seminal, short-lived 1990-91 series by Frost and Lynch which chronicled the titular town and its inhabitants, as well as FBI Agent Dale Cooper, in the wake of the murder of Laura Palmer. PEAKS was a massively influential cult series, telling a grim yet humorous, supernatural and distinctly Lynch-ian tale that had much of the world asking “Who killed Laura Palmer?” The show’s popularity swiftly declined after said question was answered and the second season seemed to drift aimlessly, before concluding in stunning manner, which will hopefully be addressed in 2016.
This all comes on the heels of a massive PEAKS’ resurgence thanks to streaming availability and the recently released “Entire Mystery” Blu set, an amazing, comprehensive collection of every episode, as well as the undervalued masterpiece film TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME.
Keep an eye on Fango for all that’s to come.
