It’s Jason Statham vs. “MEG”!

He began as a competitive diver, so who better to take on a giant prehistoric shark?

Variety reports that Jason Statham will star in Warner Bros.’ decades-in-development adaptation of Steve Alten’s novel MEG. Horror specialists like Guillermo del Toro and, more recently, Eli Roth have been attached to the project, but the director is now Jon Turteltaub, whose credits run toward more benign fare like NATIONAL TREASURE and THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE; still, Statham’s involvement ups the cool factor considerably. Dean Georgaris is scripting, with a change in locale for the monstrous megalodon to terrorize from the book’s California coast to the waters off China (which allowed Warners to draw in Gravity Pictures to co-finance). Statham, who had dual hits last year with FURIOUS 7 and SPY, has kicked ass through the TRANSPORTER films and many other actioners, and has a particular following for the completely berserk CRANK movies.
