Joel Edgerton’s Blumhouse Collaboration Titled; DatedMovies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
While many of us stateside cinephiles know Joel Edgerton as an actor, having risen to prominence in the past decade including taking up a MacReady-esque role in THE THING prequel, Australian audiences also know Edgerton as a successful screenwriter in his own right. Having penned the amazing modern noir THE SQUARE and crafted the story for the intense post-apocalyptic thriller THE ROVER, it was only a matter of time before Edgerton brought his behind-the-camera talents to Hollywood. And now that time has come, with Blumhouse having slated Edgerton’s debut as writer-director for a 2015 release, and offering the first official synopsis for the fright flick.
Entitled THE GIFT, the film stars Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall as Simon and Robyn, newlyweds who have a chance encounter with a troubled figure from Simon’s past, Gordo (played by Edgerton himself). Of course, this sends their life into disarray as Robyn begins to learn the shocking truth about Simon and Gordo. With Edgerton’s talent as a writer, I assume the creatively unrestricted process that Blumhouse has to offer might result in something really special, but only time will tell. The film is set for a July 31st release from Universal Pictures; with that time frame in mind, keep an eye out for an official poster and trailer soon.
