Mitski Goes Macabre In Shocking New Music Video, “Happy”!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, horror themed music videos have become more and more of a regularity. That could be a result of the visions of those involved, many of which turn towards the surreal and emotionally taut, or it could be the result of horror being something that can evoke a visceral response in a viewer, much like music itself. And in some cases, it’s because it’s what audiences might least expect, such as in the case of singer/guitarist Mitski new music video for the track “Happy,” from her upcoming album PUBERTY 2.

Directed by Maegan Houang, “Happy” is a delightful surprise, with a journey guaranteed to put a wicked grin on the faces of horror fans willing to give the song a shot. Without giving too much away, this 1960’s period piece is the melancholic story of a soldier who returns home to his elated wife, only to prove distant and unfaithful. The chilling ending has made “Happy” a strong contender for this writer’s favorite music video of 2016, so far. Check it out below, and if you dig it, be sure to pick up PUBERTY 2 on June 17th from Dead Oceans Records.
