New director will guide “PACIFIC RIM 2”

PACIFIC RIM 2 has been an on-again, off-again project, and it’s closer to moving forward as a director has been confirmed—who is not Guillermo del Toro.

Deadline reports that Steven S. DeKnight will take the reins of PACIFIC RIM 2 for Legendary Pictures. DeKnight has most recently been executive producer and head writer on DAREDEVIL for Marvel and Netflix, and his other TV credits include SPARTACUS, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, DOLLHOUSE and SMALLVILLE; this will be his first feature as director. Jon Spaihts of PROMETHEUS and the upcoming DOCTOR STRANGE and THE MUMMY reboot is scripting the sequel; del Toro stays on as executive producer, joined by Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent. Details of the sequel’s storyline, based on the characters created by del Toro and Travis Beacham, have yet to be released.
