“POLTERGEIST” remake now official; Plot, distributor announced

The POLTERGEIST redo from MONSTER HOUSE director Gil Kenan and OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL writer David Lindsay-Abaire is moving right along, as MGM and 20th Century Fox partner to distribute and co-finance.

To be produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert (who shepherded a redo of their own EVIL DEAD earlier this year),  POLTERGEIST will find “a family struggling to make ends meet relocate to an outdated suburban home, where they’re confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.”

Of course, the classic film from Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg concludes with the Freelings’ home imploding, but does the term “outdated suburban home” suggest in any way that the new POLTERGEIST will also find itself in Cuesta Verde. The Raimi and Tapert-produced EVIL DEAD 2013 sure had it both ways, serving as remake while alluding to  its place in the same universe as the original films.

Production on POLTERGEIST gets underway this fall.
