Robert Rodriguez begins production on “FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE SERIES”

Are you ready to spend some more time with the Gecko Brothers? Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez sure hopes so, as the vampiric shoot-’em-up property returns as the flagship series for Rodriguez’s El Rey Network, which goes live this December. This week in Austin, TX, Rodriguez begins principal photography on FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE SERIES, with the maverick filmmaker himself returning to direct the first two episodes, which will not be canonically connected to the three FROM DUSK TILL DAWN films.

Eschewing the all-star cast that drove the film into cult status, the series brings in D.J. Cotrona (G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, VENOM) and Zane Holtz (HOLES, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER) as Seth and Richie Gecko, respectively, in the roles made famous by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino in the original film. Other cast members currently known include Jesse Garcia (SONS OF ANARCHY) as an original character, Texas Ranger Freddie Gonzalez; and Don Johnson (MACHETE) as Sheriff Earl McGraw, a role previously inhabited in a string of Rodriguez and Tarantino productions by Michael Parks.

“If the movie’s the short story, the series is the novel,” states Rodrigues, adding, “We have assembled an amazing cast and crew, and viewers can expect to be part of a wild ride when the series premieres on El Rey Network next spring.”

Miramax, the studio behind the original film, will distribute the series in most international territories. FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE SERIES  is a supernatural crime saga centered around bank robber, Seth Gecko (Cotrona) and his violent, unpredictable brother, Richard “Richie” Gecko (Holtz), who are wanted by the FBI and Texas Rangers Earl McGraw (Johnson) and Freddie Gonzalez (Garcia) after a bank heist left several people dead. While on an escape route to Mexico, Seth and Richie encounter former minister Jacob Fuller and his family who they take hostage.  Using the family RV to make a run for the Mexican border, chaos ensues when the group detours to a strip club that is unknowingly populated by vampires, and forces them to fight until dawn in order to get out alive. The series deepens the tone of the film, adds new characters and backstories and expands the Mesoamerican mythology behind the vampires.

As a fan of the original, I have to say I’m rather cautious with this series. FROM DUSK TILL DAWN worked as a fun and gory twist on the vampire tale, but was rather conclusive in its final moments; where could the survivors go from there without the show going into full vampire hunting mode? Furthermore, with Rodriguez returning to the well with MACHETE KILLS and SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, how long will it be before fans see something original and risky from the famed filmmaker?
