Roger Corman reboot “DEATH RACE 2050” gets rolling with Malcolm McDowell et al.

The Roger Corman classic DEATH RACE 2000 (pictured above) was “remade” with a completely altered story as 2008’s DEATH RACE, but now the producer himself is going back to the original concept with DEATH RACE 2050, currently shooting in Peru.

Produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment, and set for Blu-ray, DVD and digital HD release later this year by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, DEATH RACE 2050 is being directed by G.J. Echternkamp, who has a background in documentaries and has appeared as an actor (under the name Gilbert John) in HARD CANDY, the series GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER and other films and TV. He also scripted with Matt Yamashita, who wrote Corman’s SHARKTOPUS VS. PTERACUDA, and the cast is headed by Manu Bennett (from the HOBBIT films and SPARTACUS TV series), Malcolm McDowell, Burt Grinstead, Marci Miller, Folake Olowofoyeku, THE SIGNAL’s Anessa Ramsey, HARD TARGET’s Yancy Butler and Charlie Farrell. Corman is producing with ANACONDA director Luis Llosa.

The synopsis hews pretty closely to the Paul Bartel-directed original DEATH RACE: “In the not-too-distant future, America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government that keeps the masses placated with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, where a motley assortment of drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for running down pedestrians and killing each other. The reigning champion and popular favorite is half-man, half-machine Frankenstein [Bennett]—but little does he know he’s taken on a rebel spy as his co-pilot.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for me and millions of DEATH RACE 2000 fans to experience the intensity, thrills and dark humor of the original,” Corman says, “fueled by a terrific young cast, spectacular vehicles and side-splitting action, literally. DEATH RACE 2050 puts the pedal to the metal to bring this enduring franchise to a whole new level.” Universal 1440 also has HARD TARGET 2, starring Scott Adkins, Robert Knepper and Temuera Morrison, awaiting release.
