“SCANNERS” to get the Criterion treatment this July!

For horror fans, the wave of genre titles joining the Criterion Collection is always cause for excitement. As the art house crowd has never been particularly fond of “horror”, these additions by an esteemed institution always signal a legitimate recognition of the technically proficient and imaginatively rich genre. However, Criterion just announced a whopper of a genre title among the next in their schedule: David Cronenberg’s wonderful telekinetic fright flick SCANNERS!

Criterion has given 2K restoration, supervised and approved by Cronenberg, to the film, which hits DVD and Blu-ray July 15th, 2014. Even though SCANNERS II and III have been given Blu upgrades courtesy of SCREAM Factory, SCANNERS has yet to be given the high definition treatment stateside until now. Criterion has previously released Cronenberg’s VIDEODROME and NAKED LUNCH on Blu-ray, as well as DEAD RINGERS on a now-out-of-print DVD.

Possibly even more exciting are the special features on Criterion’s rerelease, which includes a new documentary on the film’s special effects, a new interview with Michael Ironside, a 2012 interview with Stephen Lack and Cronenberg’s 1969 debut feature film, STEREO! The title is currently up for preorder at the Criterion site.
