“SHINING” Prequel, “OVERLOOK HOTEL” Finds Director/Caretaker

Music Video master and filmmaker behind ONE HOUR PHOTO and the stellar NEVER LET ME GO, Mark Romanek may just bring his brand of patient dread to the OVERLOOK HOTEL.

Variety is reporting Romanek is currently in negotiations to helm the prequel feature, which aims to tell an origin story of the iconic Overlook, the fictional setting of Stephen King’s seminal THE SHINING. Glen Mazarra, formerly of THE WALKING DEAD, penned the screenplay based on an excised prologue to the novel entitled “Before the Play.” King has previously referred to the prologue as a “sketchy history of the Overlook’s construction.” The story was eventually published in the magazine Whispers, as well as TV Guide.

OVERLOOK HOTEL, as Variety reports, will be told “through the eyes of the Overlook’s first owner, Bob T. Watson. A robber baron at the turn of the 20th century, Watson scaled the remote peaks of the Colorado Rockies to build the grandest resort in America, and a place he and his family would also call home.”

Romanek was to direct another major genre film in 2010, the remake of THE WOLFMAN. Famously, he left the project close to production over creative differences.
