Simon Rumley returns to Texas for “THE LAST WORD”

After crafting a truly harrowing film in the Austin-set revenge tale, RED WHITE & BLUE, acclaimed (and deservedly so) UK filmmaker Simon Rumley will helm the inspired by true events, THE LAST WORD.

Paranormal themed, THE LAST WORD comes from the wrongful execution of Johnny Garrett, a young, mentally handicapped Texas man convicted of the rape and murder of a nun in the early 80s. Until his death in 1992, Garrett professed his innocence, which was later confirmed in 2004 via DNA evidence. The actual murderer and rapist admitted his guilt in a documentary about Garrett of the same name.  Just prior to Garrett’s execution, he issued a letter which is said to have acted as something of a curse, as a host of figures involved with the case and his wrongful execution have since died.

Ben Ketai has penned the script. For more on Rumley, see Fango’s chat in which he discusses his early works hitting DVD here. [THR]
