Tom Cruise’s next mission: Universal’s “MUMMY” reboot

As Universal continues to launch new, world-building reimaginings of its classic creatures, the studio is in talks with a major star to face down one of its major monsters.

Variety reports that Tom Cruise, who previously sported fangs in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, is discussing the starring role in the updated version of THE MUMMY. Alex Kurtzman of TV’s SLEEPY HOLLOW, the new STAR TREK films, etc. and the FAST & FURIOUS films’ Chris Morgan are spearheading the Universal monster revival, and Kurtzman will direct the new MUMMY and also produce with Morgan, from a script by PROMETHEUS’ Jon Spaihts. THE MUMMY, which is targeted for a March 24, 2017 release, will take place in the present day; Cruise’s character has not been revealed, though it’s possible he will appear in other films in this cycle as well, which will build to a movie uniting the characters à la THE AVENGERS.
