Welcome to TOYS OF TERROR, Fango’s weekly feature exhibiting the coolest horror accessories across the web. Whether you’re a collector, connoisseur or simply making your love of horror a family affair, these petrifying playthings are likely to impress even the most heartless horror fan. So if you’re searching for a ghoulish gift, look no further…
Back in October, FANGORIA featured a Toys of Terror entry that featured one of our most-talked about collectibles, the “Annabelle” figure from Living Dead Dolls which brights the cursed doll from THE CONJURING and ANNABELLE to life. And with the release of the Annabelle Living Dead Doll on the horizon, FANGORIA had the opportunity to speak with one of Mezco’s top Living Dead Doll honchos, Damien Glonek, about the addition of the doll to their respectable roster of horror icons…
FANGORIA: What inspired Living Dead Dolls to tackle Annabelle?
DAMIEN GLONEK: We all enjoyed THE CONJURING, and when we found out they were making a movie solely based on the doll from the beginning of THE CONJURING, Annabelle just seemed like a perfect fit.
FANGORIA: Now that the character is a part of the horror lexicon, was there a particular demand for Annabelle over at Living Dead Dolls?
GLONEK: People definitely asked for an Annabelle doll when THE CONJURING was first released, but once we finally announced it, the feedback was greater then we could have imagined. Apparently, this doll resonated with a lot of people.
FANGORIA: What was the most difficult part of the translation from on-screen Annabelle to Living Dead Doll Annabelle?
GLONEK: The biggest challenge with translating any character to a Living Dead Doll is to capture aspects of what character we are portraying as well as retain the look of Living Dead Dolls. There were some challenges with the Annabelle doll, but I think the end result captured both properties well and each characteristic shines through together.
FANGORIA: Do you think collectors of Living Dead Dolls will be welcome to Annabelle as they would a more established horror icons such as Freddy Krueger or Dracula?
GLONEK: Annabelle has definitely been welcomed into the Living Dead Doll community just as much, if not more so, than other already established horror icons. We were surprised by how large of a reception Annabelle actually received.
FANGORIA: If Annabelle sells well, could you see bringing any more very contemporary horror icons to the Living Dead Doll line, such as characters from INSIDIOUS or Marjorie from AMERICAN HORROR STORY?
GLONEK: Annabelle is pretty much sold out so we are always on the look out for other horror icons to add to our pantheon, contemporary or otherwise. You can certainly expect to see more horror icons added to our Living Dead Dolls Presents line. After Annabelle, we have the Creature from the Black Lagoon up next.
The Annabelle Variant Living Dead Doll will be hitting shelves this March, and is now available for pre-order here.
