“Dr. Phibes” Optioned for Reboot

Throughout horror history, the revenge horror subgenre has offered some of the most profitable flicks of all time, including the SAW franchise. And today, FANGORIA has gotten word that the Montreal-based production house Twister Pictures  has optioned one of the genre’s most classic entries: THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES.

The film, entitled PHIBES LIVES 3D, reboots the revenge-horror franchise in line with the company’s taste for relentless punishment, ushering the malevolent character into a new era. Twister are still discussing a potential director, although MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D director Patrick Lussier was mentioned as a frontrunner, working from a script from Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

“Phibes is one of horror’s most terrifying figures, and his story of avenging his lost love is timeless,” said producer Carmen Rogers. “We hope that we can introduce Dr. Phibes as a tortured soul with a whole new set of tools, thanks to new technology, and hopefully he’ll be embraced like Jigsaw was for seven movies.”

Of course, filling the shoes of Vincent Price is no easy feat, but fear not, as one of the best contemporary villain actors is rising to the task. That’s right: Willem Dafoe is set to take over the iconic role as Dr. Phibes for PHIBES LIVES 3D!

“Vincent is untouchable, but having seen Willem years back in SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, I can’t think of anyone better to don Phibes’ make-up,” adds Rogers. “He’s an incredibly physical and expressive actor, and we can’t wait to show you a darker, grittier Phibes.”

Production on PHIBES LIVES 3D commences this summer, immediately following Twister’s next endeavor, FROZEN OVER HELL, which starts production today.
