The 2014 awards season is getting into full swing with the announcement of the noms for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards, in which genre fare made a pretty good showing.
A pair of movies taking alternative looks at vampirism were cited, as Jim Jarmusch is up for Best Screenplay for ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, and its star Tilda Swinton (pictured above) is in the running for Best Female Lead. Nods for both Best First Feature and the Kiehl’s Someone to Watch Award went to Ana Lily Amirpour’s A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, which is additionally nominated for Best Cinematography (Lyle Vincent). Jeremy Saulnier’s violent revenge thriller BLUE RUIN is in contention for the John Cassavetes Award (for features costing under $500,000), Jonathan Glazer’s UNDER THE SKIN is up for Best International Film and Adam Wingard is nommed for Best Editing for THE GUEST. The awards ceremony will take place on Santa Monica Beach on February 21, the day before the Oscars.
