Voodoo Doll? The second teaser for “AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN”

I’d hope we all know what to expect here. Over the next many weeks, a series of artful, most likely terribly strange teasers for the highly anticipated third season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY (subtitled COVEN) will debut online. Some will be fun to pick apart, others will be wonderful just to look at. The second is here, and seems to nod toward the Voodoo aspect of the New Orleans-set season.

A time hopping tale of two sects who’ve remained in opposition throughout history, COVEN is seemingly divided by generations of Salem witches relocated to the south and generations of Voodoo practitioners. The second teaser seems to reference the latter with its piercing pins through a woman’s body. Does it immediately recall the storied Voodoo doll, impaling the likeness of someone you want harmed?

Interestingly, the pins could also relate to any witches who’ve suffered accusations and torture as during some trials, the accused were pricked to find places impervious to pain. Such spots were called Devil’s marks (thanks Rosemary Ellen Guiley’s THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WITCHES & WITCHCRAFT) and supposedly proved the subject was indeed, a witch.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN, starring Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates, premieres Wednesday, October 9 on FX.
