Winona Ryder takes the lead of Netflix supernatural series

The actress whose ventures to the strange and scary side include BLACK SWAN, BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA and BEETLEJUICE is now poised to take her first major TV role in a Netflix paranormal project.

Variety reports that Winona Ryder will star in the untitled eight-episode series, previously known as MONTAUK and set in the 1980s in that titular Long Island town (where strange experiments have long been rumored to have taken place). The actress will play Joyce, mother of a young boy whose mysterious disappearance leads family, friends and police to uncover a government conspiracy, supernatural forces and a very strange little girl as they try to track the child down.

David Harbour will play Montauk’s chief of police in the show, which is written and will be directed by twin brothers Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer. The duo previously made several horrific short films, scripted an episode of WAYWARD PINES and have the Alexander Skarsgård-starring fear feature HIDDEN awaiting release; they’ll also executive-produce along with showrunner Karl Gajdusek, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen.
